Taekwondo is a modern combat art. It has become a global sport that has gained an international reputation and is part of the Summer Games. Dr. Jason Schneider, an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hand and upper extremity, participates in the art of Taekwondo. In today’s sports tip, he shares his knowledge for injury prevention with the following tips:
- Most importantly don’t get hit – use appropriate evasive maneuvers
- Alternatives to evasive maneuvers- Use appropriate blocking techniques
- Lack of blocking skills or evasive maneuvers were involved in 99% of total concussions
- Important preventive measures include using an appropriately fitted mouth guard and appropriate protective equipment
- Important pre-competition habits
- Appropriate conditioning and stretching
- Appropriate punching and kicking techniques
- Common injuries include:
- Contusions and lacerations
- Sprains – ankle or knee
- Fractures – especially small bones
