At Resurgens Orthopaedics, we strongly believe that children are the future of our country. For today's kids, having a promising future means living an active and healthy lifestyle now. Indeed, the activities in which kids participate today will become a big part of developing healthy habits that last a lifetime. That includes children of all levels and all abilities. That's why we started the Resurgens Charitable Foundation in 2001, to raise funds for building all-abilities playgrounds across the metro Atlanta area so that kids (and adults!) with disabilities would be able to play alongside their able-bodied peers on a level playing field which promotes exercise, cooperation, and social interaction.
With International Children's Day approaching on June 10th, we wanted to highlight the Resurgens Charitable Foundation and all the great work we're doing to help children of all abilities get the exercise they need to grow into healthy adults.
Promoting Active Lifestyles for People of All Ages and Abilities
The Resurgens Charitable Foundation was formed in 2001 after the terrorist attacks of September 11th as part of a fundraising effort for the American Red Cross. That year, we raised over $16,000 through the hard work of our physicians, employees, and their families. While our original goal was to raise money for victims of terrorism and disasters around the world, the Foundation's mission later evolved to include helping kids right here in Georgia stay healthy and active. We noticed in particular that kids with disabilities were often excluded from playground activities because the facilities were simply not designed to accommodate their needs. We felt it was time to change that. Since then, we've made a commitment to build at least one all-abilities play facility each year, a commitment which we have consistently honored.
Over time, we have expanded our fundraising activities with an annual charity golf tournament and through partnerships with other charities that promote inclusivity for children with disabilities in sports and the welfare of children in our area. To date, Foundation funds have been used to construct 17 different all-abilities playgrounds and has supported dozens of other projects related to youth sports, recreation, safety, healthcare, and education for children of all abilities. With almost two decades of fundraising under our belts, we like to think we've made a big difference for kids in Atlanta and surrounding areas, and we intend to continue doing so for many years to come.
