Resurgens Orthopaedics Surgeon Shares Latest inArthroscopic Surgery Techniques During Second Trip to Cuba
Even though Cuba is only 90 miles off the coast of Florida, access to modern medical equipment is worlds away for much of the island's 11.5 million people. By volunteering with a non-profit group called Operation Arthroscopy, Resurgens Orthopaedics surgeon Dr. Drew V. Miller was able to deliver surgical equipment to Cuban physicians and demonstrate advanced shoulder surgical techniques.
"Working with Operation Arthroscopy allows me to share my skills with doctors who do not have access to these new techniques or equipment." Dr. Miller said. "I was so impressed with the program on my first trip in 2007 that I returned this spring."
Dr. Miller and a group of several other shoulder specialists from around the US and Europe traveled to Cuba with special visas for this medical humanitarian mission. They collected and delivered specialized equipment to perform shoulder arthroscopy, and performed shoulder surgery on patients along with their Cuban physician hosts.
Operation Arthroscopy was founded in 2004 following a visit to Cuba by two orthopaedic surgeons, Dr. John Feagin and Dr. William Stetson.
Dr. Miller practices at the Resurgens St. Joseph's location. He is a past team physician for Georgia Institute of Technology Athletics and the Atlanta Falcons, and was Director of Orthopaedics at the Olympic Village during the 1996 Olympic Games. He received his medical degree from Cornell University and completed fellowships in sports medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. His areas of expertise include Sports Medicine and knee and shoulder surgery.
